While it may regularly be a character motivation or a potential prize, currency is itself rarely a focus in the Dragon Universe. Even then, there are many different currencies due to the tremendous scale that the Dragon Universe has potential for.
As such, DBU uses a system called Wealth to represent the affluence (or lack thereof) for Characters rather than having an individual currency.
Riches & Status
Wealth is represented by two values: your Riches and your Status.
Riches. Riches represent your current amount of wealth, a value that may rise or fall when Adventuring or as a result of Combat Encounters. You can have up to 10 Riches, and gaining or losing Riches is ultimately decided by your ARC depending on the narrative consequences of your campaign. If a Character would gain or lose a lot of money/valuables, then that should influence their Riches.
At Character Creation, you may start with up to 3 Riches, unless your ARC decides otherwise.
Status. Status serves as a representation of Riches, how Characters are seen by others due to their wealth and the degree of their wealth. Status is separated into several Status categories based on your amount of Riches – shown below with each different Status having the amount of Riches required to possess that Status in brackets after the name:
- Destitute (0). You have no money whatsoever.
- Broke (1~2). You can barely afford to put food on your table.
- Comfortable (3~5). You can afford all the basic necessities and then some.
- Rich (6~8). You are able to afford a good amount of luxury in your lifestyle.
- Filthy Rich (9~10). For you, even extravagant luxuries are pocket change.
Using Wealth
In a game of DBU, wealth is typically used for narrative purposes. It serves as a representation of your Character’s financial position. However, while adventuring, Challenges and Adventuring Maneuvers may use Wealth Checks.
Wealth Check. A Wealth Check is very simple. Roll a d10 and increase the Dice Score by your Riches. These are typically used during Challenges to represent such things as attempted bribery, buying something, or perhaps merely flaunting your wealth- anything that relies heavily upon your money.
The Target Number for a Wealth Check varies depending on how difficult an ARC wants it to be, but a good rule of thumb is to make the Target Number be 4+(the minimum Riches value for the lowest Status you think should succeed at this check).
